Learning to tie a horse safely and securely is an important part of owning
a horse. Unless you've had someone show you how to do it properly, it's
hard to figure out the best type of knot to use and how to tie it. These
steps will help you learn, and you can practice it at home using a rope and
a table leg or something to simulate the post.
Pass the end of the lead line around the post you are tying to.
Cross the end part of the rope back over the rope itself, near to the
post.
Wrap end around and under the lead line.
Wrap back over the whole thing, forming a loop where the end part of the
rope crosses everything else.
Tuck a bit of the rope through this loop, but don't pull the end all the
way through.
Tighten the knot that is formed by pulling against the post, but be
careful not to pull the end through.
This is what the end result should look like: knot tight against the
post, loop and end of lead hanging free.
Be sure your horse is not tied so loosely that he could get a hoof
caught over the lead. Don't leave a horse tied without supervision,
because it could get tangled in the rope or otherwise injured.
To untie the horse, simply pull the free end of the rope.
The knot and loop will disappear and the lead can easily be unraveled
from the post.
