Test Your Horse For Sand Colic

Horse Eating Hay
Horses that are free to graze or are fed their hay on the ground may consume sand that can cause life-threatening colic. Here is an easy way to evaluate intestinal sand in horses.

1. Take 5 or 6 fecal balls and mix them in a small clean bucket half-filled with water.

2. Let stand for approximately one hour. If sand is present, it will settle to the bottom.

3. Pour off the liquid. More than a teaspoon of sand left in the bottom of the bucket indicates a strong possibility too much sand in your horse's intestines that could potentially cause colic.

4. Feeding plenty of hay will help your horse to pass the sand. If a horse's intake of water and roughage is adequate, the sand may not cause problems. Be alert to your horse's needs and get a veterinarian's evaluation if your horse fails this simple test!
