Do I Have Too Many Horses? |
|
You may have heard the old adage, "You can never be too rich, or too thin..." and
most of us horse lovers would add "...or have too many horses." However, many
people are feeling hard economic times and nearly everyone is affected to some
degree. Many people are being forced to take a hard look at their finances and
decide between what's "nice" and what's "necessary". As difficult as the decision
may be, lots of people may be forced to reduce the number of horses they own.
Most horse owners will tell you that the cost of ownership is almost always outweighed
by the rewards. However, when the situation becomes too much of a burden on you
or your family you may need to consider selling. Here are some signs that you
may need to reduce the number of horses you own:
- If the health and well-being of your animals is suffering
- If you can’t afford enough or the proper types of feed
- If you can’t afford routine vet care
- If you have to miss paying other bills to care for your horse
You love your horses, so you should never compromise their health. If the
animal is suffering because your finances are, then you both will be better off if
your horse finds a new home. And you have to be practical with your spending. If reducing
your horse bills will enable you to catch up on the debt of just plain surviving,
it will be worth it in the long run. Just cutting down on the cost of board
or feed could save you hundreds of dollars per month.
Finally, understand that you do have options that you can choose from to secure the
best care for your horse. Consider some of these choices:
- Offer your horse to a friend for "free lease"
- Sell the horses you aren't emotionally tied to
Selling the horses you have that you really don't have time for could actually be in
their best interest, if you find them a wonderful home where they will get more time
and attention. If you're working full time and not able to enjoy them, put them up
for sale on Liverystable.net and find a buyer who does have the time. You'll feel
much better knowing they're in a great place with an appreciative owner. You can
draw up a contract stating you have the first chance at buying them back, should the
new owners ever decide to sell them, or come to another agreement with the buyer
that will enable you to keep in contact with your horse in some way.
Too many horses is a luxury some of us just can't afford. If you find yourself short
on horse money and horse time, it might be the best decision to let a few go. We
can help you find a good home for your horse here at Liverystable.net.
